We oftentimes think of health as the absence of disease but it is actually much more than that. I can recommend this link as a beginning: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAkEYcmCCCk
It is a TED video by Rip Esselstyn promoting a plant based diet. For those who are still clinging to animal protein based diet, this is the video for you. It is also good for the rest us vegans just to have more information as to why we are on the right path.
But health encompasses much more than just diet. Because you can be a vegan and still have health issues. Why? Because you are not attending to the other aspects of your life that contribute to overall health. You are overlooking your emotional and spiritual health and as well as looking at what is going on in your personal and professional life because those do have a dramatic effect on your physical health. People think they can get by and just ignore the other aspects of their lives and then wonder why they end up in diapers in a nursing home late in life when they still should be living a vibrant life. Or why they have cancer or heart disease and still could be eating a vegan diet.
Another good video to watch is this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7tu9nJmr4Xs&feature=youtu.be
That one is a talk by a OB-GYN about the other aspects of your life that contribute to disease. She also gives a TED talk on can the body heal itself. Yes, it can. It was actually designed that way.
But aside from the physical end, we do need tranquility and there are ways we can help ourselves without resorting to self-help books. Each of us can design our own space where we can recharge. It does not mean you need to overhaul your house to do it. But you can have a space for yourself or even take a time-out-to-regroup in your own bedroom. I have found this site to be helpful, too. It gives you a choice of 2, 10 or 20 minute meditations that focus on relaxing your body. http://www.calm.com/
Also, certain oils, when inhaled, have a tranquilizing effect on the body such as lavender and jasmine. Jasmine in particular has been shown to have the same effect as Valium. You can buy an oil defuser and use that to put the oil in so it will scent your room. There are also combination oils that are pleasing that you can use.
You could also take inventory of your social life and see if that is contributing to disharmony in your life and effecting your well being. There are times when we cannot avoid the unpleasant but we surely can take steps to minimize them.
Health needs to be looked at holistically because everything effects the body. My chiropractor knows, when he does adjustments, if I have had a rough week or not. It all effects my nervous system. There are also supplements you can take like Holy Basil which helps to ramp down the cortisol (a stress hormone) that is put out by the body via the adrenal glands. I take Adrenal Health by Gaia Herbs and Maca root capsules by Vega. (In addition to a bunch of other supplements.)
It goes without saying that exercise in some form is important for our well being. We should try to get some in, even if it is only 30 minutes of yoga or a walk outside.
In any event, it is important that we take care of ourselves by doing what we know is right to insure we have less chance of disease and more toward well being.
